Mike Bellamy Will Not Return to Clemson for 2012 Season

CLEMSON, SC - Mike Bellamy, the second leading rusher on Clemson’s 2011 ACC Championship team, will not return to Clemson for the 2012 season.  The freshman from Nocatee, FL has been ruled academically ineligible for the fall semester and plans to enter a junior college this summer.

Sixty-one Student-Athletes Earn Degrees from Clemson on Friday

Clemson, SC—Sixty-one Clemson student-athletes received undergraduate degrees on Friday over the course of three graduation ceremonies at Littlejohn Coliseum. The list included 12 members of Clemson’s ACC Championship football team and 10 members of Clemson’s top 20 rowing team.

Six Tigers Sign Free Agent Contracts

Clemson, SC—Six members of Clemson’s 2012 ACC Championship team had signed free agent contracts with NFL teams as of Monday afternoon.   The following list is in addition to the four former Tigers who were drafted Friday and Saturday.

Notes on Clemson and the NFL Draft, 2012

•Clemson had four players drafted in the 2012 NFL selection process. Andre Branch was taken in the second round by Jacksonville, the 38th pick of the draft. He was the first Clemson player taken by the Jaguars in their history (started in 1995). Dwayne Allen was the first pick of the third round, the 64th selection of the draft, by the Indianapolis Colts. He and Stanford tight end Coby Fleener will both be rookies in camp with number-one pick Andrew Luck of Stanford.

Former Clemson All-American Brian Dawkins announced his retirement from the NFL

Clemson, SC—FDP102ormer Clemson All-American Brian Dawkins announced his retirement from the National Football league on Monday. The native of Jacksonville. FL played 16 years in the NFL and was a nine-time Pro Bowl selection. He has had arguably the greatest NFL career among former Clemson players and is a strong candidate to some day become the school’s first entry in the NFL Hall of Fame.

“The Lord has blessed me to play in the NFL for 16 years,” he wrote on his Twitter Page in making the announcement Monday morning. “I would like to thank the Eagles and the Broncos for believing in me. I would like to thank all my teammates and coaches that I have been blessed to go to battle with.

“…Along with you, the fans, for helping make my career one that I have enjoyed tremendously,” he continued. “In other words, I am announcing my retirement from the NFL.

Ellington Has Ankle Surgery Minor Surgery

Clemson, SC—Clemson running back Andre Ellington had minor ankle surgery on Thursday .  The second-team All-ACC running back will not play in Clemson’s spring game on Saturday, but he should be 100 percent for summer workouts.  
The surgery, which had been planned for some time, was performed to clean up scar tissue on an ankle that was the result of an injury suffered during the 2011 season.    
The senior had 1178 yards last year to lead the Tigers in rushing.    He has 2323 yards in his career and a 5.68 average per carry, the seventh best average in ACC history among players with at least 2000 yards rushing.
 

Hopkins Has 160 Receiving Yards in Second Scrimmage

Clemson, SC—Wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins had 160 receiving yards to key the offense, and linebackers Corico Hawkins and Tig Willard had seven tackles apiece to lead the defense during a football scrimmage at Clemson Memorial Stadium on Monday.  It was the final full scrimmage for Dabo Swinney’s Tigers prior to Saturday’s Spring Game at Death Valley at 4 PM.  Admission is free and there will be no live television of the game. The game will be broadcast on the Clemson radio network.

Shatley Named Strength All-American

43_shatleyClemson, SC—Clemson lineman Tyler Shatley has been named a National Strength & Conditioning All-American by the National Strength and Conditioning Association.   Shatley was a reserve defensive tackle last year, but has moved to offensive guard this Spring and is listed as a starter for the 2012 season.
